The hourglass I was shocked to notice was also plastic (looks like glass on the photo). A negative thought of mine was that the metal screw screws into a plastic piece instead of a plastic piece with a metal insert. I don't know what that will mean for the life of the threads but it would cut production cost. Unless you use this thing daily I don't think anyone should care. Beneath that should be the ceramic portion which was mentioned in the product discription. If you don't know ceramic blades are amazing. They are brittle and you can't really sharpen them but they are very sharp. For our trial of this product we put coffee beans inside and cut them into large chunks and cranked the setting down to get smaller chunks. I imagine you can close it more to prevent any crumbs though we didn't really have anything falling out when it wasn't suppose to anyways
